THIS WED: ‘NEW RUINS’ NEW WORK BY LAUREN CARROLL HARRIS

NEW WORK BY LAUREN CARROLL HARRIS

New Ruins is the result of a residency at Melbourne’s Seventh Gallery, which shows nature in a state of terminal decline.

Painting on rescued waste timber, and in distinctly “unnatural” tones, New Ruins metaphorically used storms, clouds of air, dust and smoke and landscapes in various forms of flux and destruction to a find visual expression for the mood of anxiety related to global warming and human impacts on the planet. Images are fragmented or split across canvasses to invoke a sense of fear and loss as a result of man-made environmental catastrophes. In doing so, Carroll Harris asks how estrangement from nature can lead to estrangement from ourselves and each other.

THIS WED: ‘Everything is in Motion’

Exhibition of new work from Danny Wild and Luke Penders

Everything is in Motion is a new drawing work by Danny Wild and Luke Penders. It was created with the aid of various mechanical, robotic and wind up toys in which pens, crayons, markers and other drawing utensils were attached to enable to toys to ‘draw’.

With this piece our focus was on removing objects from their original context, investigating the unpredictable nature of drawing through non-conventional means.

THIS WED: 13 JUN: ‘RELATIVITY’

Sydney University Photography Society and Sydney University Fine Arts Society presents ‘RELATIVITY’ – a collection of artwork and photographs by the students of Sydney.

What is relativity? Relativity is the concept that points of view have no absolute truth or validity. If there is no absolute truth, what are the personal, moral, cultural, aesthetic, social, spacial and time related truths of our lives?

Through the subjects in the images and artworks exhibited, ‘RELATIVITY’ invites the viewer to reflect upon both our power and our susceptibility

THIS WED 6 JUN: ‘CALYPTICA’ BY JOEL GIBSON

A SOLO SHOW BY ONE OF OUR IN HOUSE RESIDENTS AT THE TATE, JOEL GIBSON. OPENS 6PM WEDNESDAY 6 JUN

Bringing tropical hues to the beautiful intracacies that surround us. Calyptica is an over saturated exploration of the sometimes overlooked visions of water, structure and nature.

Familar experiences are now transformed by ethereal colours to give the feel of exploring an aurora in your own back yard. When a vision is broken down into light, shadow and colour, things can seem more abstract and graphically aesthetic. A geomagnetic storm of colours reflected from a hidden pool or from Sydney harbour can can alter the mood to something a bit more mystical or more temperate. Change the tones of the structures all around us and you might find something more foreboding with an ominous sky.

Calyptica brings life to a selection of visions from the inner city regions of Sydney.

EXHIBITION RUNS UNTIL SUN 10 . JUN . 2012
